Student Blog Activities

Students will use this blog to learn about the basics of resources, trade, and commodities through the use of "case studies" of a sort. The students will explore four major U.S. historical events that relate to the three big terms: resources, commodities, and trade. Those four studies are: the Triangle Trade, Colonial Resources (exploring regional resource differences in the colonial Americas), King Cotton and Slavery, and the California Gold Rush. This blog would ideally be used with an early U.S. history class (typically taught in the 8th grade). The blog will also tie in to economic concepts through the exploration of the theme.

The students will review the posts, reflect on the studies and engage with their peers through comments, and ultimately explore current events related to trade, commodities, and resources. The students will participate in a culminating activity where they will create a "commodity" using provided resources in order to engage with their peers in trade. The students will then reflect on the activity and what it taught them about resources and commodities.
